Until 2018, Ann-Sofie Hermansson was the Mayor of Sweden’s second city of Gothenburg. To pay her rent she is currently driving a garbage truck around the town
When politicians end their careers at high positions, they usually tend to continue in related fields. Some turn into consultants of law firms, some run media outlets or launch PR campaigns.
But 56-year old Ann-Sofie Hermansson chose a different path after losing the re-election for the Mayor’s office in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second city.
In 2018, she decided to take out her heavy-goods-vehicle driving license she had obtained because of advice her father once gave her. And after years of office life, she became what many children consider their life-dream – a garbage woman.
“People keep on asking me what the hell am I doing here. But for me it’s a good solution, I need to pay my rent.” Hermansson told Politico.eu.
She says that her life in politics was really hectic. Her current job is demanding on her physique, but it’s a regular job with no meetings or phone calls.
But the change of occupation didn’t get her out of touch with people. She regularly meets and chats with them during her working hours, and also, she has around 12 thousand followers on Twitter where she posts interesting stories about herself and her colleagues on a regular basis.
“At least no one is upset with me. That makes a nice change from working as a politician,” Hermansson summarized her current role.
