A hospital employee in the Calabrian city of Catanzaro earned more than €538,000 while skipping all of his shifts. He now goes with the nickname of the “King of absentees”
For a long 15 years, an Italian public sector worker managed to receive his salary without even showing up at work.
The now 67-year-old man used to work at Ciaccio hospital in the Calabrian city of Catanzaro where he created a scheme based on threads and exploitation.
The man, who’s now nicknamed “King of absentees” allegedly threatened fellow employees and forced them not to report his absence. He also prevented the hospital director from pursuing disciplinary action.
In 2005, when the director resigned, he continued to receive paychecks without the human resources noticing. During his period of absence, he managed to earn €538,000.
The scheme was revealed in October 2020, when the worker was finally fired.
He’s currently facing investigation for fraud, extortion, and abuse of office. Six other managers at the hospital are being under scrutiny as well.
